P0113 Code: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High Input

Diagnosed error code generic P0113 indicates that the engine control module has sensed that the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor low input voltage.

The error code P0113 is considered a severe error code if your vehicle is diagnosed with this error code. Your vehicle can face problems while driving if it is not attended at the time. The error code P0113 indicates that the vehicle’s computer is getting a high reference voltage signal from IAT sensors. This code generates when there is a problem between IAT circuits and PCM. This error code occurs when the PCM receives more than 5 volts from the PCM.

Definition of P0113 error code

Diagnosed error code generic P0113 indicates that the engine control module has sensed that the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor low input voltage.

What does this error code mean?

The thermistor’s resistance fluctuates with the temperature. As the temperature increases resistance decrease, while high signal voltage is generated when the temperature tends to low.
The powertrain control module sends a reference 5 bolt current to your IAT sensor to check the air intake temperature. The temperature rise creates a drop of resistance in the thermistor, while we can get high resistance readings in cooler temperatures.

The degree of resistance in the thermistor is because the temperature will decide the voltage of the feedback that the PCM gets. The thermistor will have some resistance if the temperature of air leaks is normal, and the feedback voltage will be lower than 5 volts.
The condition of low resistance occurs when the feedback voltage is 5 volts, which means that air intake is too hot and the error code P0113 is generated.

Possible causes of P0113 error code

These are the possible causes of the P0113 error code:

  • Corroded or defective IAT
  • Backfiring in the intake manifold
  • Contaminated tip of the sensor
  • Corroded or detached wiring connector
  • Shorted IAT circuit
  • Failed PCM

Common symptoms

These are the possible common symptoms when your vehicle is diagnosed with of P0113 error code:

  • Check Engine Light illuminates
  • Air-Fuel Mixture is Too Lean or Too Rich
  • Idles Poorly When Cold
  • Faults in EGR Valve Operation
  • failed Fuel Efficiency
  • increased fuel emission

How serious is the P0113 error code?

The OBD-II generic error code is severe sometimes depending upon the situation and the model of the vehicle. You can drive with the error code for a short span of time, but it should be repaired soon. The presence of more quantity of air in the engine can lead to a misfire in the engine and can cause some severe problems.

How to diagnose the P0113 error code?

If your check engine light illuminates and your vehicle is scanned with P0113 error code. Then take your vehicle to the garage and do a proper diagnosis of your vehicle.

Check the air temperature reading

Allow the engine to run until its motor get warm. With the help of a scan, the gauge compares the temperature reading to the coolant. You will notice that the working IAT sensor will show a lower temperature than the coolant temperature sensor.

Inspect the wiring connections of PCM and IAT

The wiring connections of PCM and IAT may lose or gets corroded. You need to inspect the wiring conditions of the physical circuit between the IAT and the PCM.

Check the resistance

Measure the resistance of the IAT at room temperature after removing it from the vehicle. Apply heat to the IAT using the hairdryer to check whether the resistance remains the same or decreases. If you do not notice any change in the resistance of the IAT sensor, it indicates that there are some faults in the IAT sensor.

How to fix the specific P0113 error code?

The primary reason for the P0113 error code is a failed IAT sensor or maybe a failed circuit. This error can be fixed by repairing or replacing the problematic components of the vehicle. Cleaning the corroded tip of the IAT sensor also helps in fixing the P0113 error code.
